Remnants from my past as a graphic designer:
Playing around with the 'Christian Bode' corporate design
in unserious manner.
Furthermore You find stranded goods from my designeresque history.
And I admit, sometimes graphical design is a bypass for my
self-destructive and chaotic creativity – if I may use this euphemism.
Illustrating My Signature
Edition: »Menschliches, Allzumenschliches«
Being human is all too human,
is a wide range between hell and heaven
without reaching either the one or other,
is often mediocre, is amusing and gloomy,
is both hardly to define and obtain,
seems only desirable when it's lost.
Selected editions were printed on stickers.
It has been a while...
Building Iduna's apple out of my initials
in a German black letter type on sacral red
shows already the themes I feel related to.
Autumn, mythology, nature and tradition.
The creature is inspired by Finnish mythology
and speaks out my love for the European north
and its endless enchanted forests.
Breaking up with the idea of becoming an illustrator
I totally redesigned my initials by reducing the form
to an almost technical minimalism surrounded by
a reflecting glas sphere.
Leaving dispensable luggage behind me
only the two initials kept staying like last men stand guard.
Fundamental, clear and putting in brackets all what I am doing.
During my long travel in 2013 my inner voice
of leaving the phony and egomaniacal advertising world
behind me and following the way of an artist grew louder,
so I made tons of sketches for a logo that was
writeable and visually grasping at the same time.
A logo that is applicable as a handwritten signature
as well as a compelling digital trade mark.
Its runic-archaic character in ivory black on titanium white
makes a symbol that is prefigured of being loaded with story and meaning.
Unnecessary urge for perfection.
"Angels are mathematical." (Coil)
A wise man once said...
Act on it!
This is a nice space filler, isn't it.
Yes, I worked in the field of corporate design.
No snail was harmed during the campaign!
Building a fortress with the layout's shape of my logo was too expensive,
so I decided to paint it digitally.
Propagandize the CrisBo-Cult
With Gelassenheit into the Change:Crisbama, thinking about 'Design' and 'Dasein' in 2015.
Hey! I'm CrisBo.
Creating a CrisBo-Character.This is more a cryptic self portrait than a mascot.
Obviously he wears the old CB-Logo on his chest, so he is a little bit outdated, but I don't paint in this
digital comic-style anymore, so it's fine.
Still, I think he has a right to stay – somewhere in the shadows.
The Gods of the Harz
I did this in 2014 as a homage to the Harz, the Germanic gods and my youth.
Though I moved to fine arts afterwards,
because doing cute things is not fulfilling me
and is far to contradicting with my thinking and living,
I enjoyed the process and look at them as works that mark a watershed
in my lurching journey towards the fine arts.
From top to bottom three of nine planned works:
Wodan, Donar, Heimdall (maybe I will finish them one day...)
Runes, Geri and Freki
Bracteate with runes from 2009, Finland.
Very kitschy, I now...
Beauty and Terror
A robotic lady, a bird and a voluptuous appetite from 2009, Finland.
CD-Cover for the metalcore band 'meinestundenull',
album 'Hier kommt der Kraken', 2010.
Illustration of the hookah-smoking caterpillar from 'Alice in Wonderland'.
It was my submission for an international concept art contest in 2010,
where Michael Kutsche, leading concept artist of Tim Burton's remake
in the same year, was juror. I was glad to take second place.
When I am...
Sixty-four... Illustration during my Bachelor studies in 2009.
Small character designs for an advertising agency in 2010.
First Semester of my Bachelor Studies in 2008.
It feels like kindergarden.
The eternally hitting golem.
This was a character design with animation for a small jump'n'run-game in 2009.
Character design for Heureka:
A small 2D adventure computer game.
It was made during a Game Jam. We won.
The Gunslinger and The Waste Lands
Book cover illustration and graphic design
for Stephen King's first two 'Dark Tower'books.
I made this in my second undergraduate semester in 2008
to bestow honor upon my hero of my youth Roland.
Saga of Harald Harfager
Taken from the english translation of the Norse saga
Haralds saga harfágra (The Saga of Harald Fairhair),
who is known to be the first King of Norway (872-930),
from the Heimskringla (circle of the world)
written in Old Norse by the poet and historian
Snorri Sturluson around 1230.
This work involves only the beginning of the King's whole saga.
With my illustrations I picked up the carvings of the norsemen
and combined them with the look of woodprint, notwithstanding
everything was done with digital devices.
It's from my undergraduate studies back in 2008.
Memories from Finland, 2013.
It's difficult to always find a headline!
Amanita Crisbo and one specimen of a 'Steenkop'.
Sometimes everyone needs a cheer up.
The sublime style of the sovereignty of radical aesthetics.
The retreat of the grande armée, painted in 2013.
